Australian Naturalisation Newspaper Announcements

Part of the Australian naturalisation process from about 1918 was for the applicant to place two advertisements in Australian newspapers stating their intentions. Old Australian newspapers are available online through the National Library of Australia's website called Trove. These have been digitally scanned and indexed. Incorrect digitising as well as unusual ways of spelling Kytherian place names or even just an incorrect print can make these announcements very difficult or impossible to find.

We have put together a gallery of images that we have found so far. When you look at the quality of some or the unusual spelling you can see just how lucky some these are to have been found. We are sure there are many more that may never be found. As we find more they will be added to this collection.

These announcements are only a few lines, but this is some wonderful information. They tell where the person was born, where they are living at the time, how long they have been in Australia so you can calculate the immigration date but, most importantly, they show the possible name spelling they used in Australia, but we have seen a few typing errors.

If both announcements are found, only one image is displayed as the information is exactly the same in both, but the caption will list both newspapers where they can be found. All images were found in Trove and can be accessed through their website.

Wives were often naturalised when their husband naturalisation was approved, but there are some female announcements included.

For convenience, we have listed all our sources with the Greek spelling of surnames to keep things uniform and for ease of searching. This will help the confusing issue of different spellings of surnames both Greek and Anglicised once a person immigrated. The names in lowercase have not been matched to any known person in our files and their identities are unknown. The spelling in the caption is exactly the same as the announcement.

Due to the quantity they have been divided into sections.

All images have been found on the Trove website. Newspaper names and dates are included in the captions.
